Opening of the Cai Mep container port

INROS LACKNER AG has been responsible for the planning, contract award and site supervision. From this process emerged the first container terminal in Vietnam allowing Super-Post-Panamax class vessels, the largest vessels currently afloat, to call at the port. The port close to Ho Chi Minh City has a total area of 48 hectares with a quay length of 600 m. The handling capacity is approximately 1.2 million TEU. The modern container terminal has been built within three years in a previously inaccessible river basin, directly at a deep water access. This required large-scale soil improvement works and approximately 5 million cubic metres of sand were required for landfill works.

In January 2007, the Cai Mep International Terminal Co. (CMIT) was founded as a result of the merger of Saigon Port, Vietnam Shipping Lines and APM Terminals BV. The terminal is strategically located close to central production sites and international shipping lanes. Upon its completion, the terminal will be an important hub in transatlantic shipping towards North America and the Asian traffic with Thailand and Cambodia, among others.
